quite the problem child of fandom

I really really hate writing negative things about friends and family and culture on Tumblr because I’m also very protective of them and don’t want to see them criticized by people who don’t know them. 

But I need to get this out because I’m frozen with shock and fury right now and I’m going to write something I’ll regret on my family’s email thread if I don’t.

So we’re talking about various news sites focusing more on cultural news than on regular news, and someone points out that the one where I hang out is officially supposed to be boycotted because it dared to say negative things about certain people. Which is stupid and I don’t care (and neither do most people I know). But anyway, I was pointing out that other news sites don’t cover things like, say, this horrific story of a community torn apart by a pedophilia ring that hasn’t been successfully stopped after years because of problems with the children’s (often under five y.o.) testimonies. Like, kids are walking to the bus with their parents and pointing out the man sitting on the bench as their attacker, and they still legally can’t do anything about it. It’s awful and sick and I do’t even think there are words to describe how terrible it is.

And my sis-in-law’s response? “Can I unsubscribe from the WotD (email list) because I’d rather be sheltered?” (Me: Are you serious right now. Sis-in-law: Completely. Other [kind of ignorant] sis: Yeah, me too!)

what kind of person can just reject reality in favor of staying in her own little box of la-di-da, everything’s fine, I don’t want to hear about bad things because they don’t make me a better person (she actually just said that)

How can you ignore the plight of 100+ affected families

How can you seriously talk like that about a community torn apart by rape

How can you even say these things in public even if you’re thinking them secretly

Do you actually think that this is acceptable 

I can’t believe I set you up with my brother in the first place (who is actually defending this now with “But some people know about these things and it still happens!” ARE YOU EVEN SERIOUS)

How is one person this insensitive

Ugh I mean I know that people like this exist I just had no idea that she could be this horrible
